Avulsion Amputation of Thumb

How to bring the amputated part?

  • The cut part should be placed in a clean plastic bag
  • It should be placed in a container with the ice, such that the ice should not be in direct contact with the part

Factors that determine the success.

Type of the injury.

  • Clean cut injury has good prognosis
  • Time delay between the injury and restoration of vascularity
  • Cold ischemia time

Case History

48 years old female presented with the avulsion amputation of left thumb while working in a spinning mill.

After initial evaluation, the amputated part was examined under operating microscope.

After identifying the proximal vessels for anastomosis, the amputated part was fixed to the stump with k wire, and the digital vessels were anastomosed using 10-0 ethilon under operating microscope.

Postoperative period was uneventful.

K wire removed at the end of 8 weeks and mobilisation of thumb initiated.
