The hand is ranked among the three most frequent sites of burns scar contracture deformity. One of the major determinants of the quality of life in burns survivors is the functionality of the hands. Burns deformities, although largely preventable, nevertheless do occur when appropriate treatment is not provided in the acute situation or when they are part of a major burns. Reconstructive procedures can greatly improve the function of the hands. Appropriate choice of procedures and timing of surgery followed by supervised physiotherapy can be a boon for a burns survivor.

What is Post Burn Deformity?

Post burn deformity is one of the worst hand deformity which has severe cosmetic disfigurement and functional impairment of the hand.

Case History

This 36-year-old female who sustained deep burns involving the volar aspect of the hand following accidental fall over the burning coal in a temple festival 4 months back.

She had undergone treatment in the form of dressing for more than a month.

Now she presented with inability to use her left hand for her daily activities. Her fine movements in left hand is absent.

She underwent contracture release of the volar surfaces of the fingers and subsequent skin grafting preserving the vascularity of the burnt fingers.

Following supervised physiotherapy, she regained good functional range of movements of left hand and able to oppose the thumb to other finger tips.

She will continue to improve with the continuous physiotherapy.
