Nerve Repairs and Nerve Transfers

Nerve injuries in the hand can result from cuts, pressure, stretching, or crush injuries. An injured nerve cannot transmit nerve signals. An injured nerve can cause a lack of sensation, movement, or both. Some types of nerve injuries may heal on their own. More severe nerve injuries require surgical repair.

  • A nerve transfer is a surgical technique that may be used when a patient has a nerve injury resulting in complete loss of muscle function or sensation
  • surgeons select procedures, such as nerve decompressions, nerve grafts or nerve transfers based on a patient’s condition and which technique offers the best chance of recovery.

Traumatic amputation (complete or partial) of a limb carries significant morbidity and disability. The primary aim of revascularisation and replant surgery is to restore functional outcome and not just to have a viable segment.
Revascularisation and replant surgery has a higher success now with recent advances in microsurgery
revascularization after near total traumatic amputation is successful salvage of the limb in both form and function
